The University of Minnesota football program’s 2020 recruiting class has continued to gain steam throughout June. Over the past 10 days, the Gophers have added 12 recruits to next year’s group, bringing the total to 20.
The Gophers’ class is comprised of all three-star recruits and is ranked 24th in the nation, per 247sports’ composite rankings.
The Gophers had six commits join June 15-16, with two coming earlier this month. That means Minnesota entered the month with only six pledges.
“June is our busiest month now, the way rules have changed, the way recruiting is with official visits plus camps,” Gophers coach P.J. Fleck said Sunday on WCCO-AM. “… We’ve had 11 commitments … and are working on No. 12 here. It just shows the power of what Minnesota can be, especially with when we have these summer official visits.”
Minnesota added its latest pledge Monday with the verbal commitment from safety Abner Dubar, which he announced on Twitter.
“We’re about to start doing something special at the University of Minnesota…” Dubar tweeted.
The 6-foot, 176-pound defensive back from Anna, Texas, had 14 scholarship offers, including Colorado, Texas Tech, Baylor, Houston, Washington State and Kansas, according to recruiting websites.
Dubar, who also played running back at Anna, had committed to Texas Tech in March and de-committed in April.
Dubar is the fourth defensive back, which ties the defensive line for most incoming players by position groups. He is also the third recruit from Texas. The Gophers also have multiple recruits from Florida (three), Georgia (two) and Minnesota (two).
Late last week, the Gophers added defensive tackle Ali Saad of Dearborn, Mich., defensive end Gage Keys of Hilliard, Ohio, and offensive tackle Martes Lewis of Merrillville, Ind.
Lewis, who is listed at 6-foot-7, 320 pounds, had offers from Indiana, Kansas, Cincinnati and others.
At 6-foot-5, 240 pounds, Keys received scholarships from Maryland, Indiana, Rutgers, Cincinnati and more.
Saad, who is listed at 6-foot-4, 255 pounds, had offers from Northwestern, Illinois, Indiana, Rutgers, Boston College and others.
The Gophers also have two commits from Europe: Richard Agyekum of the Netherlands and Melle Kreuder of Germany. Both joined the class in June.
“There are certain services that these young people in Europe connect with and they bring them over to the states and they do a sort of camp circuit,” Fleck said to WCCO. “… Whether they are American or international student-athletes, we want to be able to find the best ones.”
Meanwhile, Kaden Johnson, a top target for the Gophers in 2020, tweeted Monday about his official visit to Wisconsin. The Minnehaha Academy linebacker, who’s ranked No. 1 in the state of Minnesota, said: “I had a great official visit this past weekend in Wisconsin. Thank you everyone on the Wisconsin staff for a great visit!”
